Emperor Paul I. The Present Image of the Past.
Exhibition marking the 250 Birth Anniversary

04 November 2004 - 24 February 2005
The Mikhailovsky Castle

The exhibition marking the 250th anniversary of the birth of Paul I presents a project organised by the Russian Museum and implemented by St Petersburg photographers. The photographers were asked to create a work or a series of works devoted to the life and tragic death of Emperor Paul I, one of the most enigmatic figures in Russian history. The topic did suppress the artists' inventiveness, but allowed them to fully express themselves, creating a bridge between history and modern times. The genre of the project may be defined as "historical photopainting" - an historical mosaic, which may in turn contribute to the future development of the romantic image of Emperor Paul I. Each participant tried to express his attitude towards Paul I as a person and towards the regicide which took place on 11 March 1801 in St Michael's Castle. The photographers also expressed their attitudes to the castle itself -- the most mysterious architectural monument in St Petersburg.
