Temporary exhibitions - rotation of funds

Goal: Maximum display of items from the museum depositories at the temporary exhibitions.

In 1988 the museum presented 51 temporary exhibitions inside and outside the museum walls comprising 4395 works of art.

In 1998 the museum presented 78 temporary exhibitions inside and outside the museum walls comprising 7642 works of art.

Since 2000 the museum plans to present not less than 6000 works of art at its nearly 100 temporary exhibitions annually.

Main Directions of Implementation:

The efficiency of exhibition activities is ingeniously associated with the improvement and growth of 2 sectors:
I. Organization of exhibitions.
II. Design

"Directorship of the State Russian Museum" - сis formed on the basis of the Department of Expositions and Exhibitions with the aim of further improvement of the organization of exhibition activities both inside the museum (palaces) and outside the museum premises (in the Russian Federation and beyond the borders of the Russian Federation).

"Directorship of the Exhibitions" Structure
Number of the Personnel - 65 members

Tasks to accomplish:

Director - general management and supervision of museum activities

Sector of expositions:

  1. provision of safety and maintenance of the established by the administration regime of the exposition work;
  2. solution of long term and current problems arising in the process of organization of concerts and events of educational character in exposition rooms of the museum.

Sector of organization of exhibitions inside the museum and on the territory of Russia:

  1. preparation of the necessary documents for the arrangement of the exhibitions (contracts, agreements, acceptance certificates, lists of works, budgets, orders etc.);
  2. provision of safety throughout the period of exhibition;
  3. provision of safety for private collections.

Sector of the organization of international exhibitions:

  1. preparation of documents to obtain the permit from the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation for removal of exhibits from the collection beyond the borders of the country;
  2. taking exhibitions of foreign partners in and out of the country;
  3. drawing up of customs documents and customs clearance for imported and exported exhibitions.

Sector of technical provision of exhibitions:

  1. technical provision of exhibitions with standard and non-standard equipment (showcases, stands, drapery, podiums, pedestals);
  2. provision of packing and transportation of exhibits (special containers and packing materials);
  3. suspension systems;
  4. lighting equipment of exhibitions.

Brigade of scaffold - packing, loading and unloading, assembling and dismantling of the museum exhibitions and the exhibitions of foreign partners.

"Directorship of the exhibitions" should comprise 2 commercial bodies catering for the demands of the museum in specialized transport unhampered customs clearing:

  1. Russian-German Joint Venture "Hasenkamp-GRM" providing for a whole set of different transportation and freight forwarding services for the arrangement of exhibition;
  2. Depositary of temporary storage guaranteeing maintenance of the exhibition goods as stipulated by the laws of the Russian Federation on maintenance of goods under customs control.

System of Exhibition Halls

Every palace of the Russian Museum complex should have special exhibition halls (alongside permanent exposition) equipped with retractable stands and showcases to save time and expenses when changing the exhibition space.

In the main complex of the museum buildings - halls of the first floor in the Benois Wing, halls of the small suite of rooms on the second floor, halls ¦ 83, 84, 85.

In the Marble Palace - halls of the third floor, the White Hall.

In the St. Michael's (Engineers') Castle and in Stroganov Palace - upon the completion of the restoration.

Design Centre of the Russian Museum

Goals:

  1. Creation of the museum centre of design on the basis of the design sector capable of providing the high artistic and technical standards of design to meet the growing demand of the museum in new design technologies, advertising, academic and educational activities.
  2. Creation of exhibition projects of different levels of complexity in collaboration with the academic research sectors; possibility of their implementation by the design centre of the museum.
  3. Creation of the stock of exhibition and display equipment on the basis of developing module technologies and their adapting to the museum tasks.
  4. Creation of the sector of computer service enabling to produce different advertising, exhibitions and information materials in direct conformity with their artistic design.
  5. Training of designers capable to combine their professional skills with the ability to create and develop the peculiar artistic image of the museum reflecting its specifics.
  6. Consolidation of effective coordination between different museum services to facilitate the implementation of design projects.

Economic Grounds

Design project of a big exhibition worked out without side assistance costs the museum $ 30 000.

Provided with its own technical stock and personnel the museum expenses will cover only the cost of materials (about $ 5 000).

Necessary Equipment

The equipment provision of the design centre and the sector of computer service should be based on the modernization of the computer equipment of the museum: extension of on-line storage, acquisition of additional media with greater memory capacity, new materials and technique necessary for carrying out design projects.
