Publishing House of the Museum
(Pages of Albums and Museum Publications - As Continuation of Museum Exhibition Halls)

Goal:

  1. Creation of the museum centre of complete or partial polygraphic editorial preparation of all the museum publications. The centre- efficient and autonomous- should be on the basis of the present museum structure consisting of three parts: editorial and publishing department, "Palace Editions" Publishing House, photograph library and photo-laboratory.
  2. Creation - within the centre - of a sector of duplicating technique catering for the constantly growing museum demand in printed matter published in a small number of copies or distributed freely- invitations, lists of exhibitions and museum projects for the sponsors, press releases and brochures about the museum for the tourist agencies and hotels; programs of lectures, concerts; booklets of the Friends of the Russian Museum society etc.
  3. Creation- within the centre- of a depositary of art materials ensuring the publishing and lecture activities of the museum. It should be done by all traditional means and with the use of modern and ultramodern devices (photographs, slides, digital images, CD-ROM, DVD-discs, video cassettes etc.)

Brief Economic Grounds

All the above mentioned measures will bring the museum a real economic effect:

  1. The volume of the museum printed production has grown 7.7 times for the last 10 years. The museum presented 74 publications - 1232 quires total.
    The percentage of commercial effectiveness of publishing activity as regards other fundraising earnings.
    1996 1997 1998 2008
    4,5% 3,5 % 12 % 30%
  2. The earnings of the museum due to fundraising activities have grown ten times for the last 5 years. The fundraising activities necessitate diverse forms of advertising to attract the constantly growing flow of visitors, tourist groups; to increase the membership of the "Friends of the Russian Museum" society, to enlarge the scale of commercial services etc.
  3. In 1995 the museum presented 1721 reproduction works to provide for the publishing process
    In 1998 - 4546 works

The growing interest to Russian culture and the popularity of the Russian Museum have enhanced the receipts of the Russian Museum from its licensing activities; their share of profit is constantly growing compared to other sources of profit.

Besides the production and editing of printed matter by the museum itself - competitive, timely and faultless from the point of view of copyright - is the only way to fight numerous forms of pirate editions which cause tremendous material losses to the museum, the losses that are impossible to estimate.

The balance and market cost of the publishing house should be flexible and based on 2 main principle:

  • constant search of advantage executors outside the museum to carry out expensive and labour-consuming processes, the execution of which is neither profitable nor expedient;
  • absolute independence from intermediary agents or expensive executors for the execution of diverse routine activities of the museum bringing real commercial effect aimed at creation of the museum image, attractive for the visitors, investors and sponsors.
