The main components of information service net will be the following:

  1. Information zones of the State Russian Museum palaces
  2. Information zones of free access funds
  3. Computer classes of free access
  4. Lectures' and concerts' complex (there is separate project concerning this)

One of the main pecularities are components that will be united with the use of the State Russian Museum common computer net and will have access to the common data bases that are kept on servers. It will exclude possibility of needless doubling of information, it will also lighten centralized control of information actuality and safety as well as it will allow to use perspective modern technologies.

1. In present there are two information zones in the State Russian Museum: in the box-office hall and in the Mikhailovsky Palace Garden Vestibule. We suppose to create five zones more:

on the entrances to the Marble Palace and Stroganov Palace, Michael's (Engineers') Castle, Benois Wing and in the passage between Benois Wing and Mikhailovsky Palace.

Kernel of information zones are information stands that have shown themself to advantage - these are specially constructed computers with multimedia computer program. Besides there could be mounted color printers to give visitors possibility to get printed copy of favorote image for home use.

Approximate cost of the project - $ 100 000

2. In the same way will be organized the information zones of free access. In total we plan to create 8 funds to 2008:

These would be the Golden Chamber (Mikhailovsky Palace), Gallery of Russian Porcelain (Mikhailovsky Palace), Center of graphic Art (Michael's (Engineers') Castle) etc. The main content of any zone is the information stand with electronic catalogue of proper fund collection, that will be installed near it (in the case of the Mikhailovsky Gardens it will be the Rossi Pavillion). Catalogue should be constructed interactively, i.e. it should give visitor possibility to get information concerning the chosen exhibit.

ОApproximate cost of the project - $ 80 000

3. In present there is only one computer class of free access - that is the Internet Center in the Marble Palace. We plan to create 6 classes: in the Michael's (Engineers') Castle, Stroganov Palace, Mikhailovsky Palace (on base of the library and school cabinet), in Corps de Guards Pavillions (Center of the museum education and the Russian Museum computer center).

These classes' functions won't be limited by just giving access to the Internet. There could be also access to:

  • the Russian Museum electronic catalogue

  • resources of the State Russian Museum library and other libraries and museums of the town (within the limits of the computer net on the town scale for cultural institutions that was formed in the course of the Soros Fund projects realization);

  • working out of the Education Museum Center
  • etc.

Accordingly classes will be orientated on various groups of visitors: the State Russian Museum staff, specialists from other museums, children and the museum visitors.
