The "Art museums of Russia" server
Being research coordination center of art museums of Russia the State Russian Museum creates this server on the base of the Internet center of free access.
The following information has been put on the server:
I. Data base that includes information concerning art museums of Russia, picture- galleries, museum-reserves as well as a number of memorial and other museums.
Museums are presented in the alphabetical order of towns (or any other settlements) and in regional lists. Access to reference of any museum is carried out from the both lists.
1. On the first stage the data base will include the following positions:
- Present name
- Post address
- Telephone, e-mail, Internet address
- Information of working regime
2. On the second stage:
- Reference of museum history and its main collections
- Bibliography
3. On the third stage:
- Data base of images of museum collections' exhibits according to criteria
- Recognized masterpieces of museum
- Works reflecting collections' specifics (in sections)
- Monographic and thematic reviews
Special task on the third stage is creation of information searching system that will provide obtaining various information from different inquiries.
Principle of putting information according to certain criteria will allow different categories of visitors to use data in full scale on various categories.
Thus there will be virtually recreated the row of art collections according to kinds, genres, time periods, artists, private collections etc.
Creation of this kind of base will let us "exhibit" on the server virtual research exhibitions, that could not be realized in real life not only because of lack of financing but also of the fact that it is impossible to transport a number of works (safety state, exhibiting on permanent exposition etc.).
In present we have worked out special formats for storing images that from one hand allow to provide good quality of image and from the other hand do not permit illegal using of image in publishing industry.
II. Data base of the museum current events - exhibitions, editions, acquisitions etc. With the help of special software in accordance with worked out criteria of input and choosing of information the museum workers will be able to place their information on the data base on their own and use information placed by other museums. Information of the data base will be structured and available on certain criteria.
The server's presence will allow to organize holding research seminars with the use of Internet, particularly putting programs and materials of teaching seminars that annually are conducted on the State Russian Museum base. This form of training is widely used in present time in foreign practice. With the use of analogous Internet centers that were opened in 30 regional cities of Russia we would have possibility to provide support for scientific and practical seminars for museums using information available on the server. This will provide sharing successful experience of some museums to museums that need this kind of experience. There also will be possible to conduct teleconferences on various directions of museum activity.
Approximate cost of the project - $ 120 000
The cost includes expenditures on software working out and training museum staff to work with the system.
