Benois Wing

The new exhibition in the Benois wing is aimed at presenting the various ways of development of the realistic tradition in works of contemporary Russian artists whose style rests on the border of academism, photorealism and other variations of this trend of the last decades of the XXth and beginning of the XXIth century. The exposition brings together the works by well-known, mainly young painters and graphic artists from St. Petersburg and Moscow (Alexei Belyaev-Gintovt, Ekaterina Gracheva, Vadim Grigoriev-Bashun, Alexander Dashevsky, Frol Ivanov, Denis Ichitovkin, Taisia Korotkova, Kirill Koteshov, Pavel Otdelnov, Olga Osnach, Ekaterina Pestova and Igor Pestov, Vladimir Potapov, Vitaliy Pushnitskiy, Kerim Ragimov, Hamid Savkuev, Victor Safonkin, Maria Safronova, Mikhail Khazin and others). Many of these authors are united by the aspiration to fix in sharp and sometimes provocative form the fresh view in which realistic tradition is regarded nowadays.

The range of interests of the authors presented is very wide: this is the love to the "vanishing nature", the manifestation of the "soviet" in modern life or the author's retreat to the position of a silent observer who avoids any characterizations and comments. Despite the fact that the artists presented at this exhibition don't belong to a single art group the exposition has the unified conception: it reveals the specific features of realism of the XXIth century in context of problems of the contemporary art and presents this phenomenon as an inalienable part of the nowadays art process.
