ALEKSANDR MANUSOV

16 February - 13 April 2009
Marble Palace

23 paintings and 13 graphic works by Aleksandr Manusov from private collections and the Russian Museum collection are presented at the exhibition.

The creative oeuvre of Aleksandr Manusov is the outstanding and original phenomenon in the Russian art of the last third of the 20th century. Representative of the 1970s and 1980s Leningrad underground, he combined cultural continuity with a free object research. The active member of the Experimental Fine Arts Society, initiator of numerous exhibitions, and participant of discussions, in the silence of his studio Manusov was able to abstract himself from everyday bustles.

His main authorities were: Rembrandt van Rijn, Francisco Goya, Pavel Filonov, Victor Borisov-Musatov, Paul Cézanne and Robert Falk; from the contemporaries: I. Ivanov and A. Arefyev, V. Shagin and R. Vasmi. For a long time the world of Manusov’s creative fantasies was restricted by the chamber subjects: “walks”, “talks”, “bathes”. And only at the end of his short life the artist gained unexpected power and force of generalization.
