PAVEL NIKONOV

25 April - 03 June 2008
Marble Palace

More than 100 paintings and graphic works (mainly from 1980s to 2000s) by Pavel Nikonov from the collections of the Russian Museum, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the other museums of Russia as well as from the artist’s collection were presented on the exhibition.

Pavel Nikonov belonged to the generation of “the men of the 1960s”. He was one of the founders of so-called austere style. But soon he moved away from it and therefore he evaded the stamp that established itself on many years in the Soviet painting.

From 1980s the village theme was at the centre of his creative oeuvre. During the period from 1985 to 2001 Pavel Nikonov created his “Village Cycle”, where he opened the truth about today’s, living and at the same time dieing village. In the idea of the artist a village is at the centre of the world and includes an earth, sky, human being and his labour that he carries as a burden during all his life until the end of the days.

Pavel Nikonov revived in his paintings classical and simple human language – the language of creator of myths. Eternity that is connected with a swift-flowing life is reflected in his creative oeuvre.
