ZHOSTOVO ART

31 May - 30 July 2007
Stroganov Palace

The Zhostovo Art exhibition is opening in the Stroganov Palace of the Russian Museum on the 31st of May. Nearly 150 artworks of the applied art from the collections of the State Russian Museum, the State Hermitage, the Peterhof State Museum-Preserve and the Alexander Pushkin Museum, Memorial Apartment are displayed at the exhibition. Painted Zhostovo trays have been famous and popular in Russia for a century and a half. Bouquets and flower garlands against a black lacquered background are considered to be one of the most striking symbols of modern folk art. The first large-scale exhibition of Zhostovo paintwork took place in the Russian Museum in 1976. Thirty years later viewers may get acquainted with the history and the present of this unique center of folk art. One may see the true value of the national art property — the lacquer Zhostovo art. Trays of the Vishnyakovs workshops and papier-mache subjects are not the only exhibits. The exhibition for the first time displays trays of the Tsyganovs, Matveyevs and Sorokins workshops. The artists dated their new works for the 180th anniversary of the craft. These works form the modern part of the exhibition.
