Religious St Petersburg

22 December 2004 - 10 May 2005
The Benois Wing

The exhibition will show the grand perspective of the development of the Russian ecclesiastical art and architecture within more than two centuries - from Peter the Great to Nicholas II - through evolution of art styles and political ideas connected with the religious traditions of the country. The exhibition is meant to correct the already formed historical image of the capital and to reveal its truly significant role in the religious life of Russia in the 18th - the early 20th century. There will be shown painterly and graphic images of the Petersburg churches, sketches of paintings, project drafts created by the famous architects, wonderful architectural models, rare photographs. A special section of the exhibition will be formed with works of painting, pieces of metalwork, wooden sculpture and craving from the destroyed churches. Many of the shown works have never been exhibited or printed before.
