St Petersburg. Portrait Of The City And Its Citizens
From the Collection of the Russian Museum

18 May - 10 November 2003
The Benois Wing, First Floor

On exhibit, there are about 500 works of art from the collection of the Russian Museum that give an artistic depiction of St Petersburg. Among them are views of embankments of rivers and canals, axquisite palaces and parks, portrait galleries of famous people inseparable from the history of the city, and memorable historical events. Saint Petersburg is one of the few cities in Russia that was so often and differently depicted during its 300-year history. The 18th century engravings executed by Alexei Zubov and Mikhail Machaev, views by Maxim Vorobjev and Vasily Sadovnikov reflecting architectural ensembles of Petersburg in the 19th century, and the retrospective city views created by the "World of Arts" masters at the turn of the 19th - 20th centuries, depict Petersburg during revolution time and also give a contemporary representation. A catalogue for the exhibition has been published.
