Marble Palace

This exhibition of eighty photographs dating from 1996 and 1999 presents the "winter" series of cityscapes from Mikhail Pikalov's My St Petersburg: Seasons cycle. The artist plans to mark the city's tricentenary in 2003 by presenting the entire cycle in four albums with three hundred photographs in each. Mikhail Pikalov was born in Voronezh Region in 1950. He has lived in St Petersburg since 1971, restoring architectural and religious monuments. In 1978, Pikalov graduated from the philosophy department of St Petersburg State University. He presently heads Pikalov & Son, a company engaged in the restoration of such famous architectural monuments as St Isaac's Cathedral, Kazan Cathedral, the Admiralty, the palaces of the Russian Museum, and the twelfth-century Church of St George in Old Ladoga.
