In Malevich's circle
Confederates, Students, Followers in Russia 1920s-50s

30 November 2000 - 26 March 2001
The Marble Palace

The exhibition of works by Malevich's students and followers from the Vitebsk School of Art and the Institute of Artistic Culture in Petrograd/Leningrad is held in parallel to the Malevich show at the Russian Museum. The exhibition displays the works of El Lissitzky, Vera Yermolaeva, Nikolai Suetin, Ilya Chashnik, Yefim Khidekel, Lev Yudin, Anna Leporskaya, Konstantin Rozhdestvensky, Ivan Kudryashov and Yury Vasnetsov. The show addresses the works of those who knew the artist personally, colleagues and such former students of the master at the Institute of Artistic Culture as Valentin Kurdov and Yury Vasnetsov, for whom the study of Cubism and Suprematism were merely episodes in their oeuvres. The show includes not only works made by the artists under Malevich's guidance; it also displays paintings, graphic art and porcelain created up to the 1960s, tracing the creative paths of those artists who began their careers under Malevich's tutelage. The exhibition shows over five hundred works of painting, graphic art, applied art and sculpture from the collections of the Russian Museum, the Tretyakov Gallery and other state and private collections from Russia, Europe and the United States.
