Opening of the rooms № 18-20 after major reconstruction (from the Grand Staircase to the Garden Vestibule)

After a complete restoration of the spaces on the ground floor of the Mikhailovsky palace, rooms № 18-29 (from the Parade Staircase to the Garden Vestibule) are now open to the public.

The permanent exhibition created in these rooms includes works by Fyodor Vasiliev, Vasily Vereshchagin, Nikolai Ge, Konstantin Makovsky, Vasily Perov, Alexei Savrasov, Henryk Semiradski, Pavel Chistyakov, Konstantin Flavitsky, Ivan Shishkin and other masters of Russian art, as well as examples of sculpture of the second half of the XIXth century.

The rooms are equipped with adjustable LED lighting. This allows to show the paintings in the best lighting conditions possible, helping visitors to see familiar canvases in a new way. Many of these paintings were also restored.

During one and a half years, the rooms themselves were also restored, including the grisaille murals, the plafonds in the former quarters of Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich, parquet floors and other elements of the historical decoration. The concept for the exhibition of Russian art of the second half of the XIXth century has been updated. Paintings that previously were in storage or displayed in different halls are now a part of this exhibition. These include little-known painting studies by Ivan Shishkin and works by Marie Bashkirtseff, canvases by the well-known battle painter Vasily Vereshchagin from his "Russian series", as well as genre paintings by Konstantin Makovsky and landscapes by Alexei Savrasov.
