This book contains works by Karl Brullov that have recently been found in private collections in Moscow and St Petersburg. Some of the published paintings have been mentioned in sources and in literature with the notation "location unknown", and others were unknown to earlier authors who have written about Brullov. The majority of the works presented in the book are being published and commented upon for the first time. The catalogue includes a scholarly article in which the issues surrounding the identification and study of the newly-discovered works by Brullov are covered in detail, as are the unique characteristics of the artistic decisions he made while creating these works. An annotated album of illustrations is also included.

This book is dedicated to the image of birds and insects in both the art of the past and in contemporary art, from the work of the "classes of beasts and birds" at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1763-1795), which marked the beginning of the history of the animalistic genre in Russia, to works created at the beginning of the 21st century. The interpretation of forms and images of the natural world changed in line with prevailing styles and mentalities. The album of illustrations introduces works of fine art from museums and private collections and sets the stage for four scholarly articles that cover different aspects of the visual interpretations of "those who fly and crawl" in paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings and decorative and applied art, as well as in works created by representatives of contemporary art with the help of complex technology. The work of eminent Russian animal sculptor Nikolai Lieberich (1828-1883), a retired colonel of the Imperial Guard who was honoured with rank of Academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts for his work, constituted an entire epoch in the history of Russian bronze sculpture. The illustrations in the album are preceded by scholarly articles presenting a detailed biographical sketch that highlights different aspects of the life and work of the sculptor, and familiarizes the reader with unique works of art found in different museum collections. Two appendixes are included. One of them, a list of works by Nikolai Lieberich, which was compiled in 1898 and is now a part of the Russian Museum's collection, is being published for the first time. The other is an open letter by the sculptor entitled, "On the Question of Artistic Rights of Ownership", which was published in 1881 in the Peterbursky Listok newspaper and had long been forgotten.
