The Avant-Garde: Before and After

The publication accompanies the exhibition of the same name, held in Brussels within the framework of Europalia - Russia festival. The book contains articles by Russian and foreign experts, describing problems and evolution of Russian Avant-garde, its major artistic strategies and ideas, main forms and styles.

The peculiarity of the book is a view on Russian Avant-garde not as an all-sufficient phenomenon but as a process, developing in a certain context having causes and effects, its "before" and "after". Interspecific and interdisciplinary approach characterizes this publication: painting, graphic art, sculpture, assemblage, scenography, posters, photography, decorative and applied art, agitational art and architectural projects. The chronological bounds of the book are 1900-20s from Symbolism to Social Realism.

According to the conception of the catalogue, the album section is divided into two parts: Before and After; the main part consists of chapters, joining the material on the basis of conceptual, stylistic and specific typology. The book includes works from leading Russian collections, numerous provincial museums and private Russian and foreign collections. It contains almost all exhibited works, their legends and detailed annotations as well as short biographies of artists. Part of material is published for the first time.

Not a single work of art perished due to the selfless labour of hundreds of museum workers. The catalogue also includes the propaganda material of the war period published in Perm. The curators of the State Russian Museum contributed their article on the agitation workshops.

The publication includes fragments of the correspondence between Marc Chagall and an artist, a journalist and a collector M. Gordeyev published in Russian for the first time; the introduction to the first catalogue of the Musee national Message Biblique Marc Chagall, Nice and the artist’s biography. The colour plates introduce almost all works of the exhibition given in chronological order (1908-73), the major part of which the viewers will see for the first time. The publication reproduces the photographs from the family private archive unknown to the public.

The edition to the same name exposition in the State Historical Museum in Moscow exposes the theme of the peasantry in the fine art in such a scope for the first time. It includes brief articles about the role of the peasantry in Russia, traditions, culture, art and morals of a man living on earth and presents the peasantry art as the most valuable part of the country's legacy.
Not only various sides of peasantry life but also the folk art's influence on different generations of artists especially Russian Avant-Guard masters who are presented in the collections of the Russian Museum, are reflected in the edition.
The best and the most significant masterpieces of the peasantry art, icons, works of professional painters, graphic artists, sculptors from the XVIII-th century till the 1970-s and photos form the album part of the edition. The publication is dedicated to the history of drawing and watercolours of the first half of the 19th century. This is the most comprehensive book.
The book aimed at combining various methods of studying this vast material: chronological, genre, stylistic, artistic, analytic, historical and everyday. Drawing is presented here as an independent creative sphere as well as collaborating with other forms of art. The catalogue introduces individual peculiarities of outstanding artists of that period and researches drawing of the first half of the 19th century and stylistic and genre peculiarities of that epoch.
For the first time, the book contains considerable archive information on the oeuvre and life of renowned as well as little-known artists, on the history of creation and existence of works. New ascriptions are published in the catalogue.
The structure of the publication enables to trace the oeuvre of artists in various contexts.

Ivan Martos. Well-Known and Unknown... The Portrait in the Sculptor's Oeuvre

The publication accompanies the exhibition devoted to the 250th anniversary of birth of the prominent sculptor Ivan Martos. It includes illustrated article on the portrait oeuvre of the master and a catalogue with detailed annotations.
The book consists of few preserved works by Ivan Martos in the sphere of easel portrait. Part of them has been recently attributed and has not been published before: the marble bust of I. Betsky (Tsarskoe Selo State Museum-Preserve), marble bas-relief of P. Soimonov (Museum of Mines). Sculptural portraits of Alexander I created by Ivan Martos are published for the first time. Two of them are in Helsinki, the third one — the monumental bust of the emperor for St Petersburg Exchange — is stored in the funds of the Russian Museum. The book is supplemented with documentary material and rare archival photographs.

Andy Warhol: Artist of Modern Life

The publication is supplemented with an illustrated biography of the artist, short history of the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh and bibliography. This publication acquaints with the oeuvre of Mark Rozov, painter and photographer. It contains articles on the topic of the publication and an album. The artist aims to show the paradoxical character of the Soviet epoch of the 1930s-80s by means of photography. It was the epoch when the people's dreams about the bright future, expressed in the elements of the metal decor of the Achievements in the National Economy exhibition and other Moscow buildings, reproduced in parallel with photos of steel makers and industrial landscapes, stress the inconsistency between the far-fetched plans and the real life.
The catalogue is supplemented with the biography of the artists.

The publication includes articles by St Petersburg and Moscow experts describing peculiarities of development of collage in Russia and its history in the 20th century. The structure of the book corresponds to the exhibition plan and contains the following sections: texture, applications, decoupage, assemblage, "rag paintings", photomontage, reproduction collage, objects and computer collage.
The main peculiarity of the publication is a detailed description of a technique of each work, i.e. this is an attempt to show the "formula of author's world-building".
The book reproduces major part of works presented at the exhibition. Many works are published for the first time. The catalogue is supplemented with biographies of artists.
